A Father and Daughter Were on a Bicycle Ride When They Heard a Sound Coming From a Storm Drain That Made Them 'Sick

"He doesn't have family."

A father and daughter were getting in a morning bike ride Sunday when they heard a sound of a crying baby coming from a storm drain by the bike trail.

So the bicyclists and others hoisted the slab off the drain and saw a newborn boy almost 8 feet below, police in Blacktown, Australia, said.

"We felt sick," Hayley Otte told CNN affiliate Seven Network. "We just wanted that baby to know...that it was OK."

A 30-year-old woman the network said was the mother was refused bail after being charged with attempted murder; she's scheduled for a Monday court appearance.

Police told Seven Network that the newborn was squeezed through the drain's narrow opening Tuesday and dropped, just 24 hours after his birth — meaning he survived in the storm drain for five days.

The baby — who was in a serious but stable condition at a hospital, the network said — likely will become a ward of the state.

Later Otte and her dad went to visit the newborn in the hospital and brought baby clothes.

"He doesn't have family," Hayley Otte told Seven News, "so we wanted to try to give him as much as we can, to know that he's got something."
