When You Hear His Reason, You'll Understand Exactly Why This Fire-Breathing Guest 'Endorsed' Rand Paul on 'The Colbert Report
December 13, 2014
"Rand Paul 2016!"
Who's the mythical master of the Lonely Mountain, slayer of dwarves and, apparently, backer of Republican Sen. Rand Paul's presidential aspirations?
That's right — the dragon of "The Hobbit," Smaug, "endorsed" Paul during an appearance on one of the final episodes of "The Colbert Report" Thursday night.
Paul's almost-official presidential campaign got Smaug's backing for one simple reason: The wyrm is a proponent of the gold standard.
"Rand Paul 2016!" the dragon crowed.
Smaug also declared himself to be a firm conservative (in the satirical style typical of Stephen Colbert's show), and lamented the state of Hollywood politics.
“It’s hard for conservatives to get good roles in this town,” Smaug complained. “That’s why Kelsey Grammer and I are always up for the same part.”
