Famed Pastor's Passionate Sermon About Adultery, 'Sexual Trysts' and What It Truly Means to Know God

John Piper, a prominent theologian and pastor, is no stranger to analyzing and critiquing what leads his fellow faith leaders to make sinful mistakes, and in a recent sermon he outlined exactly why he believes many preachers and Biblical experts still commit adultery — a sin that is explicitly forbidden in the Bible.  

Piper insinuated that there are many who fight "graduate school sins with a grammar school knowledge of God," proceeding to explain why.

"Some of you might say, 'Wait, there are as many PhDs in theology who commit adultery as less-educated people.' To which I would say, 'Probably more,'" he said in a recent sermon. "Why is it that people with PhDs in theology commit adultery?"

He went on to deliver an animated answer: "They don’t know God!"

Piper went on to say that a person can read theology intensely for 40 years, but that he or she can still fail to truly know God as the "highest treasure" of his or her lives.

"We’re talking about knowing God here in 1 Thessalonians. They don’t know God," he passionately continued. "They don’t know God for who he is — infinitely valuable, infinitely beautiful, infinitely satisfying — why your soul was made. There are more pleasures at his right hand, more eternal joys in his presence, than you could have in ten thousand sexual trysts."

As TheBlaze previously reported, Piper has critiqued sinful behavior at the hands of pastors in the past. Last year, he pleaded with his fellow preachers "to avoid the sinful seduction of money," offering up five points of advice to help faith leaders avoid negative pitfalls.

“With every public dishonoring of Christ, every public dishonoring of His Word and His Gospel, and His Church, it makes me angry and it makes me sorrowful,” Piper said during a podcast last year. “My response to this is really not to pile on any additional condemnation … but rather to try to respond for the rest of us in a way that tries to prevent these kinds of things.”
