The buyback program, the largest in the city's history, will offer up to $200 value for a working handgun, $75 for a rifle and a higher rate of payment for a weapon determined to be an assault-type rifle. There was strong turnout for the event with many residents turning in guns they haven't used in years. Police say a Florida man died Tuesday while showing a relative how to clean a gun.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said 43-year-old Josmel Herrero was on a video call with a family member, showing him how to clean a gun, when he accidentally shot himself in the chest, the Miami Herald reported.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police responded to the house after receiving several reports of gunfire. Herrera was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he later died.

A police investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.
