All Hell's Gonna Break Loose': Michael Steele Warns GOP Against Nominating Mitt Romney

"Keep in mind that Trump has a fervent base."

As theories of a potentially brokered GOP convention continue to make headlines, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says if the Republican Party tries to nominate Mitt Romney, "all hell's gonna break loose."

In an interview with TheBlaze TV host Buck Sexton, Steele argued that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's supporters are "fervent" and will not come to the voting booth in November if the billionaire businessman does not get a fair shot at the GOP nomination.

"Keep in mind that Trump has a fervent base, they have stuck with him through thick and thin, they continue to grow it and those folks stay with him," Steele told Sexton. "If he's not in play, they won't play, and that could be a real problem for the party as a whole."

Though Steele has not endorsed anyone, he said GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio needs to drop out of the running if the Republican Party wants to stop Trump from capturing the nomination.

"I'd tell Rubio to drop," Steele said. "He stands to lose the most right now. I don't see the pathway of him winning the Florida primary next Tuesday, and he doesn't want to lose that if he wants any political viability going forward."

Steele said Rubio does not have any viable constituency that will rally around him nationwide.

"The question for him is: What is your constituency that will rally around you in the succeeding states that will give you the numbers to be competitive?" Steele concluded.

It is important to note, however, that Rubio is closing the gap between him and rival Trump. The latest Florida poll shows Trump at 38 percent followed by Rubio at 30 percent.
