Driver Gives Cops Unexpected Explanation for Why He Refused to Pull Over

Instead of stopping, the driver motioned with his hands to indicate that he had a cell phone in his hand.

Michigan State Police officers were led on a chase Sunday after a driver refused to pull over. When they finally were able to talk to the man, he offered an unexpected explanation for not immediately complying with orders.

MSP told WWJ-TV that officers attempted to pull over a Lincoln Continental in Washington Township that had an improper license plate. Instead of stopping, the driver motioned with his hands to indicate that he had a cell phone in his hand. The man then raised his finger and signaled that he would pull over shortly.

Police cars surrounded the driver on the side of the highway where the man was arrested without incident. During the arrest, the 36-year-old told officers that he didn’t stop at first because he wanted to call his family and finish the joint he’d been smoking.

The driver, who is from Clinton Township, told police that there was a warrant for his arrest in Florida, that there was marijuana in his vehicle and that he knew he was going to jail. Open alcohol and marijuana was found in his vehicle, according to WWJ-TV.

Police suspended the driver and also processed him for driving under the influence. He was taken to the Macomb County Jail, where he was to be held pending a prosecutor’s review and possible extradition to Florida.
