Alleged Robber Thinks Holding Up a Drive-Thru Is as Easy as Walking in With a Gun — 911 Audio Reveals He's Wrong

"He tried to kill me."

Newly released 911 audio reveals the moments after an alleged armed robber got more than he bargained for from a drive-thru clerk who was determined to fight for his life.

"I need the police. The guy just tried to rob me. He took all the money. He had a gun. I took his gun," the clerk, breathing heavily, says in the 911 recording obtained by WRGT-TV. "He ran, he's out here in Drexel somewhere. He tried to kill me."

The crime happened in Drexel, Ohio, just outside of Dayton, shortly after 8 p.m. May 5. That's when police say a man dressed in camouflage pants, a navy blue hoodie and white gym shoes went into the store and wielded a gun.

“After the victim had gathered cash as demanded by the suspect holding him at gunpoint, the suspect ordered the victim to tape his hands and feet with duct tape brought to the scene by the suspect,” the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department said in a statement, according to the Dayton Daily News.

But the clerk wasn't giving up that easily.

"The clerk reportedly attempted to take control of the weapon because he feared for his life," the department added. “After a struggle with the suspect who bit him several times [on] the face, and several rounds being fired from the weapon as the struggle ensued, the victim gained possession of the firearm and the suspect fled out of the business and into the neighborhood to the north of the business."

According to WRGT, the suspect got away with at least $1,000.

Detective Chris Plummer said the suspect is still on the loose.

Authorities released a photo of the suspect's face, which was captured on surveillance video, and said he fled the scene in a maroon Jeep and possibly had an accomplice.

At least one resident of the small community, Anthony Fulton, said he recognizes the suspect.

"My cousins are all friends with that guy. They've known him their whole life, they've grown up together," Fulton told WRGT.
