Wal-Mart Shooting Suspects Unexpectedly Encounter Bystanders Legally Carrying Guns

Two bystanders put a stop to an altercation that could have ended in lives lost.

Four suspects were taken into custody by police Sunday evening after allegedly firing guns in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Augusta, Maine, WCSH-TV reported.

According to police, two bystanders who were legally carrying handguns of their own intervened, putting a stop to what could have ended in lives lost.

Police told WCSH that the suspects were sitting in vehicles parked next to each other when an argument escalated into a gunfight. Two of the suspects sitting in one car opened fire on the occupants of the other car, who fired back.

At one point, the shooting came to a pause. Police said a suspect then exited one of the vehicles to confront the occupants of the other vehicle. That's when the two witness, who were legally carrying, put an end to the altercation.

WCSH reported that the four suspects are being held at Kennebec County Jail and are facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking, reckless conduct with a firearm and aggravated assault.
