Alicia Keys: U.S. 'Cannot Claim to Be the Home of the Brave' Until Gun Control is Passed
July 26, 2016
Many on social media were not happy with Keys' comment.
Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys drew the ire of many on social media after claiming at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night that the U.S. is not "the home of the brave" because it hasn't passed more gun control.
"Women are the answer," says @aliciakeys before performing her song "Superwoman" at the #DemConvention #DemsInPhilly https://t.co/8fP7ylP7ze

"Women are the answer," Keys asserted ahead of her performance of her hit song "Superwoman" and before introducing Hillary Clinton, who appeared via webcam. "We have the power to ensure that this country gets on the right path. I dedicate this song to the Mothers of the Movement and all mothers who have lost their sons and daughters to senseless violence."
"Until we deal with gun control in America," she continued, "we cannot claim to be the home of the brave."
At that, Twitter lit up with messages rebuking the celebrity musician.
@RichardGrenell @aliciakeys Another celebrity ungrateful for their freedom - shocking

@RichardGrenell @aliciakeys The 54th Mass. Regiment would beg to differ. They did this for you, Ms. Ungrateful. pic.twitter.com/GKZm0yZB0u

@RichardGrenell @aliciakeys we can't be the "Home of the Brave" without gun control? Totally naive!

Keys spoke and sang on the same night Clinton formally secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president.
