Steele expressed dissatisfaction with both Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during remarks in San Francisco on Friday at an event marking the 40th anniversary of the progressive magazine Mother Jones.
“I will not be voting for Clinton,” Steele said. “I will not be voting for Trump either.”
Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, said that Trump has “captured that racist underbelly, that frustration, that angry underbelly of American life and gave voice to that.”
“I was damn near puking during the debates,” Steele added.
Steele, who served as the party’s chairman from 2009 to 2011, said he believes Trump represents only 30 percent of the Republican Party.
