Why an Alabama drive-in theater won't show 'Beauty and the Beast' remake

An Alabama drive-in theater said Friday that it will not be showing the "Beauty and the Beast" remake because it includes a gay character.

Under new ownership, the Henagar Drive-In Theatre in northwest Alabama announced on its Facebook page that it will show family-oriented films and because of the gay character, the remake of the classic Disney film does not fit the bill.

"When companies continually force their views on us we need to take a stand," the Facebook post said.

"If we cannot take our 11-year-old grand daughter and 8-year-old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it [sic]," the post continued. "If I can't sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it."

The new Henagar Drive-In Theatre owner said that "we are first and foremost Christians" and "will not compromise on what the Bible teaches."

"We will continue to show family-oriented films so you can feel free to come watch wholesome movies without worrying about sex, nudity, homosexuality and foul language," the post said.

"Beauty and the Beast" director Bill Condon told Attitude magazine in a recent interview that the character of LeFou, played by Josh Gad, will be portrayed as gay.

"He's confused about what he wants," Condon said of the character. "It's somebody who's just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it."

Condon added that there will be a surprise at the end of the movie that is a "nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie."
