Michigan attorney general candidate says: Vote for me; I don't have a penis

A Michigan attorney general candidate is urging voters to cast their ballots for her because she doesn't have a penis. That's not a paraphrase or a summary; it's what she actually said.

"Ask yourself this: who can you trust most not to show you their penis in a professional setting? Is it the candidate that doesn't have a penis? I'd say so," Dana Nessel, a Democrat, says in a YouTube video.

Following the deluge of sexual misconduct allegations plaguing politicians, media, and Hollywood personalities, Nessel said she knows how to put an end to the growing problem.

"If the last few weeks have taught us anything, It's that we need more women in positions of power — not less," Nessel said in her ad. "I read the news. I bet you do, too, and has me wondering: Can we afford not to?"

Nessel points voters to her website to find out more about what she will do if she's elected.

What won't Nessel do if she is elected?

Conversely, Nessel mostly offered insights on the things she won't do if elected.

"I will not sexually harass my staff, and I won't tolerate it in your workplace either," Nessel says. "I won't walk around in a half-open bathrobe. And, I'll continue to take all sex crimes seriously just like I did as a prosecutor.”

The Michigan Democratic Party may end up with an all-female ticket for its statewide offices of senator, governor, attorney general and secretary of state.

Nessel's ad is a pushback on the notion that there shouldn't be only women on the 2018 ticket, which she told WJKB-TV she hears voters often say.

"Yes, I'm a woman. That's not a liability," Nessel said. "That's an asset."

On Wednesday, the former assistant prosecutor spoke to WJBK about the ruckus-causing ad.

“I think the ad was rather tame when it comes to the news stories that have come out, whether they are journalists, whether they’re in Hollywood, or whether they’re political representatives. We’ve heard some pretty lewd stories coming out,” Nessel told WJBK.

Has a woman ever been elected as Michigan attorney general?

If elected, Nessel would be only the second woman to hold the attorney general position in Michigan. Democrat Jennifer Granholm was the first.
