Ted Cruz absolutely grills Mark Zuckerberg over Facebook's bias against conservatives

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) used his time to question Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the alleged bias against conservatives on the phenomenally popular social media platform.

Here's what he said

"Mr. Zuckerberg does Facebook consider itself a neutral public forum?" Cruz asked. "Are you a First Amendment speaker expressing your views, or are you a neutral public forum allowing everyone to speak?"

"I don't believe that, there is certain content that we clearly do not allow. Right?" Zuckerberg responded. "Hate speech, terrorist content, nudity, anything that makes people feel unsafe in the community."

"From that perspective, that's why we generally try to refer to what we do as a platform for all ideas," Zuckerberg said, adding that the goal of Facebook was not to speak politically."

“There are a great many Americans who I would say are deeply concerned that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship,” Cruz said, offering examples of conservative stories being purposely underreported on the social platform.

“To a great many Americans, that appears to be a pervasive pattern of political bias,” Cruz added.

"I understand where that concern is coming from, because Facebook and the tech industry are located in Silicon Valley, which is an extremely left-leaning place,” Zuckerberg responded.

“And, this is actually a concern that I have, and that I try to root out at the company, is making sure that we don’t have any bias in the work that we do,” he continued. “I think it is a fair concern that people would at least wonder about.”

Cruz then quizzed Zuckerberg about any left-wing candidates, websites and stories that were blocked on Facebook. Zuckerberg said he didn't know if they had been or not.

Zuckerberg went before the Senate Commerce and Judiciary committees Tuesday in order to respond to lawmakers' questions about the controversy over Cambridge Analytica's misuse of Facebook user data.
