Liberal pundit argues the Bible promotes abortions: ‘The Bible is … pro-abortion, that’s a fact’

Cenk Uygur, an activist, businessman, and liberal political pundit, argued that the Bible is pro-abortion.

Uygur, the founder of The Young Turks — a leftist outlet — even went on to cite specific Bible verses to support his claims.

Uygur and Ana Kasparian, also of The Young Turks, were discussing the recently passed anti-abortion amendments in Alabama and West Virginia when he made the remarks.

The liberal pundit went on to refer to Alabama as "Saudi Alabama" and warned women to leave the state if they want their rights honored.

"If you're a woman, get out — get out before [Brett] Kavanaugh and the other guys take away Roe v. Wade," he said. "Otherwise, they're going to take away your rights, and they're going to put you in prison. That's what they do in Saudi Arabia."

Addressing Christian Americans, Uygur said, "You're wrong about your Bible. You've been misled, you've been lied to. Your religious and political leaders have kept you in ignorance. The Bible is actually pro-abortion; that's a fact."

Uygur noted that abortion rights have never even been a religious problem — it's been a control problem.

"It was never about the Bible, the Bible says the opposite," he explained. "It was always about controlling women."

What's the evidence to support Uygur's theory?

To support his theory, Uygur cited passages from the book of Numbers — specifically from Chapter 5, which talks about the Hebrew practice of the ordeal of the bitter water, which, originally translated, says nothing about miscarriage or pregnancy.

The ordeal of the bitter water — or the ordeal of jealousy — was a test for a suspected unfaithful wife and was contained in the book's Priestly Code.

Citing a New International Version translation of the verses, Uygur said, "'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. ... If you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband' — here, the priest is to put the woman under this curse — 'may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.'"
