Two of the country's leading public health experts took to the airwaves on Sunday to explain the progression of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States and the measures being taken to combat it.
In three separate television appearances, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head Dr. Anthony Fauci and former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb pushed back against suggestions that President Donald Trump and the federal government were caught flat-footed by the COVID-19 virus that originated in China.

During an appearance on ABC's "This Week," anchor Jonathan Karl asked Fauci whether the federal government is doing all it could to address the pandemic."Are you confident that the federal government is doing everything that needs to be done right now to contain this?"
The world-renowned immunologist's response was unequivocal: "Right now, John, yes, absolutely."

'Let's get real here'
In a separate Sunday show, CNN host Brianna Keilar pressed Fauci on whether he and Trump are practicing the "social distancing" they are encouraging Americans to adhere to in light of the doctor touching the same microphone as the president.
"I'm practicing pretty good social distancing," Fauci said.
He added, "The picture you showed about the microphone, let's get real here. There are certain things that you have to do" while demonstrating that if he had left the microphone where it was, it would have blocked his face.
"My using my two fingers to get the microphone down isn't that bad, so I don't think we should make something of that," Fauci said.

'They've been on top of this'
Meanwhile, on CBS' "Face the Nation," anchor Margaret Brennan asked ex-FDA head Dr. Gottlieb if the White House is listening to his expert opinion.
"I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to talk to officials in the White House all through this. Some of the calls that I was making, some of the conversations I was having go back to January. They've been on top of this," Gottlieb said.
