Kids’ cartoon features ‘non-binary’ characters who prefer ‘they/them’ pronouns after show’s crew members ‘came out’

A children’s show that airs on Cartoon Network is set to release “another LGBTQ inclusive episode,” according to the non-profit GLAAD.

An episode of “We Baby Bears,” scheduled to premiere on June 17, will feature two “non-binary” characters who prefer to use “they/them” pronouns.

The episode, titled “Polly’s New Crew,” marks the kickoff of the show’s second season.

According to a clip from the episode posted to Cartoon Network’s YouTube, the new characters introduce themselves to the rest of the cast and discuss the usage of their preferred pronouns.

“I am the great Winnifred, she/her, actor extraordinaire,” one character states.

“Our crew also has a new addition,” one of the bears replies. “Meet Box. They use they/them pronouns, and they make an exceptionally good quiche.”

Another character, Polly, then explains that the Polly character “use[s] they/them pronouns as well.”

GLAAD praised the show for incorporating LGBT-friendly themes into the children’s cartoon.

The show’s team told GLAAD that they made the decision to feature non-binary characters and discuss pronoun usage after some crew members “came out.”

“During the production of ‘We Baby Bears,’ a few crew members came out with they/them pronouns, and we felt that it was important to reflect that in the show. Our show team values representation because it’s something everybody on the show deeply cares about, and that’s why we aim to cast LGBTQ talent like Alok Vaid-Menon, Harvey Guillén, and Dominique Jackson,” the team told GLAAD.

In May, the show aired an episode that featured a character voiced by Dominique Jackson, an actor who identifies as “trans.”

Jackson is best known for acting in the series “Pose” and “The Book of Queer.”

“My role as Cassi was really fun, but was also a reminder that everyone could tell stories despite their gender identification or sexual orientation!” Jackson stated. “I’m very fortunate to have had this experience, especially when many are pushing for my community’s eradication by saying we are dangerous. Throughout the whole experience, I wasn’t really thinking that I was a person of trans identification telling a story to children – I’m just me! I saw myself providing entertainment and a message that love and care are very important guides to being good human beings, knowing that we should respect everyone and show compassion for those in need of support.”

WarnerMedia Kids & Family did not respond to a request for comment, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported.
