New Zealand man gets 10 COVID-19 vaccine shots in a single day

A New Zealand man received 10 COVID-19 vaccine shots in a single day. An investigation has been launched to find out why the man got double-digit COVID-19 vaccine doses in one day.

Astrid Koornneef – group manager operations for the Covid-19 vaccine and immunization program in New Zealand – noted that the country's Ministry of Health was aware of the person who received 10 COVID-19 vaccine shots and was taking the matter very seriously.

Koornneef told the New Zealand Herald, "We are very concerned about this situation and are working with the appropriate agencies."

Authorities believe that the man got 10 COVID-19 vaccine shots because he was doing so on behalf of those hoping to fake their way past the New Zealand government's vaccination mandate that applies to 40% of the country. Officials suspect the man visited multiple vaccination centers on Friday, and was likely paid for the shots in order to make it appear that they were fully vaccinated.

"To assume another person's identity and receive a medical treatment is dangerous," Koornneef said. "This puts at risk the person who receives a vaccination under an assumed identify and the person whose health record will show they have been vaccinated when they have not."

"Having an inaccurate vaccination status not only puts you at risk, it puts your friends, whānau and community at risk, and the healthcare teams that treat you now in the future," Koornneef stated. "Medical practitioners operate in a high-trust environment and rely on people to act in good faith to share information accurately to assist with their treatment."

Koornneef suggested that anyone who received multiple vaccine doses in one day to "seek clinical advice as soon as practicable."

Helen Petousis-Harris – vaccinologist and associate professor – said it was unlikely that the man would suffer any serious harm. She said those who are over-vaccinated are more likely to experience increased fever, pains, and headaches.

"We know that people have in error been given the whole five doses in a vial instead of it being diluted, we know that has happened overseas, and we know with other vaccines errors have occurred and there has been no long-term problems," Harris said.

There was a 91-year-old man in Ohio who accidentally received two COVID-19 vaccine doses in one day, which caused him to go into shock, according to Live Science. He recovered from the multiple shots.

A 23-year-old Italian woman was mistakenly given six doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine all at once, CBS News reported. The woman was admitted to a hospital as a precautionary measure and was released a day later after there was no severe side effects.

Harris called anyone paying for a fake vaccination status and taking advantage of a person in desperate need of money as "unbelievably selfish."

Of the eligible population, 94% of New Zealanders have received one dose of COVID-19.
