Teenager and her boyfriend tried to strangle and poison her grandmother over their relationship, police say

A female teenager and her boyfriend tried to strangle and poison her grandmother in order to maintain their romantic relationship, police said.

The harrowing incident unfolded in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

A police report said the 80-year-old was driving with Madison Barnett, her 18-year-old granddaughter, and the granddaughter's boyfriend when she saw a rope come over her head from the backseat.

“He caught her off guard with one of these, tried to grab her," said Antonio Mojica, the brother of the boyfriend. He told KATV-TV that they tried to strangle her but that she was able to escape after Barnett punched her.

“She had bit Madison, so she was able to break free a couple times,” he explained.

Police said the panicked couple ran to Mojica's apartment while the grandmother called police.

Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Dillon Quirk said they ran off into a nearby drainage ditch to try to escape police, but were unsuccessful.

The report said that once the male juvenile was in custody that he threatened to beat the officers, to kill them, and slit their throats.

Mojica said that the teenagers were upset with the grandmother because they wanted to spend more time together, and she would not give in to their demands.

According to an affidavit, he spoke to Barnett before she was arrested, and she confirmed what her grandmother had suspected — that they had previously tried to poison her.

“When she looked in the drink she could see half dissolved pills in her drink floating still,” said Mojica.

Barnett reportedly told investigators that she discussed where to dispose of the grandmother's body.

The two have each been charged with aggravated assault and battery, while Barnett is also charged with one count of poisoning food, drink, medication, or water.
