President Trump welcomes 'worst mayor in the United States' Bill de Blasio to the 2020 race with scorching video
May 17, 2019
'It will never happen'
President Donald Trump sent a "welcome to the 2020 presidential race" video from aboard Air Force One to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Thursday afternoon that was anything but welcoming.
De Blasio officially launched his campaign that morning with little fanfare — and much mockery.
The president began his message by saying he'd just heard that the "worst mayor in the history of New York City" — nay, "the worst mayor in the United States" — had launched a bid for the White House.
He then offered a prediction: "It will never happen. ... I would be very surprised to see him in there for a long period."
Why?
Well, only pro-crime, pro-high-tax voters will support him, according to Trump.
"If you like high taxes and if you like crime, you can vote for him," Trump said. "But most people aren't into that."
The president also offered some career advice to the mayor: "It would be better off if you got back to New York City and did your job for the little time you have left."
But Trump did end on a positive(ish) note: "Good luck. Do well"
