Republican town council candidate in Indiana dies on Election Day after collapsing at polling station

A Republican candidate for a town council seat in Indiana passed away on Election Day after collapsing at a polling station.

David "Red" Worrall was running as a Republican for an at-large seat on the town council of Clarksville, Indiana, a city with more than 22,000 residents just north of the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky.

According to his bio on a Clarksville website, Worrall, 59, had previously served one term on the District 3 Town Council but then stepped away from politics to focus on his health. "The last election I had some health issues that held me back from getting out and working and talking to people in the neighborhoods," Worrall said.

Recently, Worrall said, "several groups of people" persuaded him to rejoin the political fray. "[T]his time I feel up to the task of making another run to get elected and serve the fine people of this great town!" Worrall added, according to his bio.

Unfortunately, it appears that his health did not improve as much as he had thought. On Tuesday, Worrall was greeting voters at a polling station at Renaissance Academy when he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.

The Town of Clarksville issued a statement about Worrall's passing. "It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of David 'Red' Worrall, who passed away earlier this afternoon," the statement said.

"A former member of the Clarksville Town Council and current At-Large candidate, David's dedication to our community was truly commendable. We will never forget his passion for public service and his unwavering desire to create positive change in our Town. David's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and the community he strived to serve," the statement continued.

Worrall was one of five candidates vying for two open at-large seats on the town council. The two candidates who earned the most votes would win the seats. Worrall posthumously came in third place.

Worrall spent his entire life in Clarksville. He graduated from Clarksville High School in 1981 and was operating an automotive and machine repair shop at the time of his death. He claimed in his bio that he "love[d] this town and wouldn’t live anywhere else."
