The TLC reality show that chronicles the life of Florida transgender teen Jazz Jennings plans to feature a "farewell to penis" party ahead of Jazz's upcoming "sex reassignment surgery."
When did this happen?
During the Jan. 15 episode of "I Am Jazz," mom Jeannette says she wants to throw the party and Jazz enthusiastically agrees. Even though it's not really fun, "laughter is the best medicine," Jeannette said during the episode titled, "Caterpillar to Butterfly."
The scene creates an awkward moment for her husband, Greg. He tells his wife he will not eat any of the penis-shaped cake she wants to bake for the party.
No word on whether a "farewell to sanity" party is also planned.
What was said?
Jeanette starts off the conversation by saying she's in a couple of advocacy groups on Facebook who have followed Jazz's journey. Since they've followed Jazz's story for so long, she'd like to let them know what's going on.
"That's where I get a lot of strength from," she said, referring to the groups.
But Greg isn't so sure that everything must be aired in public.
"I typically prefer to keep private matters private," he said.
However, Jeannette convinced him that he needs to be the "Yes man," adding, "I want to have a 'farewell to penis' party."
"This is not fun," Jeannette explained. "There's nothing fun about this. But laughter is the best medicine. Jazz is having the surgery. Let's not freak out, and let's say goodbye to her old penis."
Jeannette went on to say that she doesn't want to bake a vagina cake, so it has to be a penis one. The conversation went downhill from there:
Greg: "You're gonna get a cake of a phallus, and you're gonna sit there and cut it up?"
Jeanette: "It's not gonna look like a phallus. It's just gonna look like a friendly little penis with a face."
Greg: "I will not eat that cake."
Jeanette: "What about a penis piñata? Do you like that idea?"
Greg: "I don't even know how Jazz would feel about something like this. I mean..."
What does Jazz want?
But Jazz is all for it. "So long, farewell I want to do this," Jazz said. "This sounds so fun."
Jazz also suggested she might do "a little eulogy to my penis."
"Yeah," Jeannette said, suggesting that Jazz begin with, "We've been together a long time, you and I."
Jazz said that since her penis was called "caterpillar," her vagina should be called "butterfly." She also said she enjoys making her dad feel uncomfortable.
"This quirky and fun idea seems like a cool thing, but also, I love making my dad uncomfortable, and if this penis party is gonna do just that, then we got to have a penis party!" Jazz said.
