Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has signed a new executive directive forcing city officials to be uncooperative with federal immigration officials. He has also instructed officers at the city's airports and ports to not investigate a person’s immigration status.
Over the past three years, the LAPD has refused the request of federal immigration officials to detain illegal immigrants arrested for nonviolent crimes in the absence of a warrant. The mayor's new executive order expands that policy to include the city's fire department and airport police.
He believes immigration enforcement should remain separate from police officers’ duties in order to build trust with immigrants.
