Timeline: Here's why Cliven Bundy walked free in the Nevada ranch standoff case

US District Judge Gloria Navarro dismissed all charges against Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and two of his sons, Ammon and Ryan, on Monday, citing "flagrant prosecutorial misconduct," and accusing prosecutors of willfully withholding evidence.

What happened

Four years ago, Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy refused to pay federal grazing fees, an act intended to oppose what he considered to be federal government overreach. The default ultimately lead to an armed standoff between the Bundy family and government agents who were attempting to confiscate their cattle.

When the dust cleared, Cliven and two of his sons were arrested and charged with numerous felonies. To read more about the Bundy case, check out our explainer story here.

Glenn’s take:

On today’s show, Glenn chalked up a detailed timeline of the events which led to the high-profile showdown between an American rancher-gone-rogue and the federal government.

“This is the breakdown of a civil society,” said Glenn. “The militant federal buildup was wrong, but the call for militias, I think, was wrong as well. Each side escalated an already tense situation. The government has a right to enforce the law, but here is the real story … the Bundys have a legitimate complaint. The government has no business owning or managing public land. Period.”
