It raised many eyebrows when we learned last week that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration received 46,000 rounds of ammunition. This revelation—which we are now told was a “clerical error” — came on the heels of the Social Security Administration procuring “174,000 rounds of “.357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point pistol ammunition.”

All of this leads to the question: Why do so many federal agencies need bullets?

While the government claims it needs the ammunition for training– that is exactly the problem. The expansion of the federal law enforcement and regulatory apparatus should be deeply troubling for anyone who believes in limited government and federalism. America has too many national authorities employing their own armed officers to police a vast and growing array of federal statutes.  And in the process, these Feds trample on the police powers left to the states under the Constitution.

The growth of the federal law enforcement bureaucracy has jumped dramatically over the last 20 years. There are now 73 federal agencies that have armed officers, often called “special agents.” And all of these agencies now cordon off and enforce a federal fiefdom of the more than 4,500 criminal laws at the federal level and thousands of additional regulations that have sprung up in recent decades.

The result is a panoply of specialized, niche enforcement organizations that will be tasked to balance the rights of U.S. citizens with a need to justify their budgets. While the U.S. Congress has used the interstate commerce clause to pass sweeping legislation that has eviscerated state rights, the enforcement mechanisms have started to catch up with the rampant over-legislation.

As of 2011, there are at least 25,000 sworn (and armed) law enforcement officers working for federal agencies not traditionally associated with law enforcement, and 3,800 of them were specifically criminal investigators.

The list of agencies—many of which are recent creations—that have their own police forces is staggering. Even the Environmental Protection Agency has its own sworn officers, as does The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). While NOAA only has 63 officers today, the EPA started out with one armed officer in 1978 and as of last year it had 265. There is also the General Services Administration, the Department of Education, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development—and the list goes on.

This is not to say that these agencies do not pursue, in many cases, real violations and crimes. And the protections intended by the laws themselves may be necessary. But the problem is that state and local law enforcement should be tasked to handle many of the issues that have been transformed into federal concerns.

There is a lot of overlapping and duplicative effort with these federal agencies. With approximately 800,000 local and state police officers in the United States, the burden of enforcing laws that cover wildlife, agriculture, or other localized issues should fall on those closest—and therefore most accountable—to the people they police.

As we head into the thick of the 2012 election, a majority of the American people claim to wanted a smaller federal government. Nowhere is the power and reach of the state more acutely felt than in law enforcement. But unless Americans begin to push back against this avalanche of federal police and regulators, the number of people receiving a paycheck to investigate and prosecute average citizens for opaque and even unknowable federal violations will grow dramatically.

Editor’s Note: Buck Sexton will lead a discussion about the proliferation of federal agencies with armed agents tonight at 6pm ET on Real News From The Blaze.

The Machine called government is out of control.

Go anywhere in this country and you’ll see fences, signs, no tresspassing, off limits, regulated areas, stay on the path, protected no go zones, endangered wildlife zones, park closed for seasonal mating of the arroyo toad, no fires, permits required, protective gear required, even the sky and water have limited use and are regulated. I mean the list goes on and on ppl and these hired gunmen are the enforcers of areas they have cordoned off from you and me…the PEOPLE. We are the ones paying for their salaries and benefits and are often treated as the enemy of this country.

I didn’t use to suck this bad people!

When we allowed moral decay, we allowed the government to regulate the results of our wayward and irresponsible behaviours. Now there is not much turning back until the final curtain is dropped.

Excellent!! the US has more folks in prision than any other civilized country. The constitution only lists three federal crimes. but the books are FULL of others enacted via legislaiton. Those laws need to be repealed; the states need to be the law enforcement agencies; not NOAA; .357 Sig; why not use an expensive calibre? pun intended.

Our once proud country has become a police state and unless we react

Obama has pissed the military off to the point I’m quite sure they won’t

Why does the SSA have armed special agents? One explanation, honestly, was in case the elderly SS recipients get upset because of cutbacks in Medicare and/or SS benefits and revolt. Well, folks, Obama reduced Medicare by some 700 billion, it’s time for rebellion.

You can’t name one agency or program that has had any cuts in fraud- quite the opposite. And your hero is doing nothing less than encouraging the fraud to continue. Heck, yours wasn’t even a ‘nice try’ at a rebuttal.

They are fining, arresting farmers for growing food for their own consumption (based on interstate commerce violations)… the FDA spy on their own scientists (then fire them) that dissent FDA corruption and whistle-blow on dangerous products being approved http://www.naturalnews.com/036875_FDA_paranoia_surveillance.html and according to my inside sources it is unlawful for any alphabet agency (that’s not actual law enforcement) to carry weapons ever…..in Michigan small farmers have been forced under threat of arrest to shoot all their pigs as NO ONE is allowed to own a pig that’s not pork manufacturing plant….

The military will not defend the president, they will protect the people, I am confident of that. Some may desert but they will uphold the constitution and defend their families. Pay attention to OWS, they maybe in silent mode, but there are there to incite riots for Pivens. Obimbo will go down but the confusion will cause havoc. Right on John. Until a few of these creeps are chased down in the streets they will continue to sell us out. They may not pay tomorrow, or next week, or next year. But, they will pay.

I do, I reload and I can get generic .40/.45 cheaper than I can get FMJ namebrand tops… so that means I don’t have to worry if I have target loads in a mag… but I also load gold dot and gold saber for defense loads so while there is a difference, its not much.

Wad cutters for general practice and sighting in.

But you train how you fight and fight how you train.

If you do not use plenty of hollow point in your action training, you will be really unprepared for the results.

But the fedgov thinks they are smart and stupid people like us just don’t understand these complicated things.

Weaponizing bureaucrats giving them para military training is a deeply troubling trend and the next president needs to start cutting back on government by taking weapons off these Rambos.

You need law enforcement to serve a warrant and catch a bad guy? Call the State Police to ride along with you. This will help the entire Republic sleep better at night.

Depending on the target ..I do. But it does get a little expensive. :)

Occasionally I run two magazines of hollows through my gun just to make sure that there aren’t any problems using hollows. It’ expensive, but it is good to make sure that everything operates well.

They do, if we are the targets. They cost almost 2X FMJ ammo.
