Officials are investigating whether any other individuals entered the Las Vegas gunman's hotel room during the time he was registered there, multiple senior law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation told NBC News.
The attack
Police said gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on about 22,000 concertgoers Sunday night at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival from his 32nd-floor room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Police said Paddock was dead when they entered his room. Nearly 60 people were killed and close to 500 were injured in the attack.
Days after the attack, Paddock’s motive remains unclear. Police have said that he researched locations in Boston and Chicago — including the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago — and that research may have been part of his efforts to plan an attack.
The investigation
According to NBC News, investigators are “puzzled” by two discoveries. They found a charger in the hotel room that does not fit any of the gunman’s cellphones.
Secondly, garage records show that “during a period when Paddock's car left the hotel garage,” one of his key cards was used to access his room.
NBC News notes “there are several possible explanations for these anomalies,” but investigators say that they “want to get to the bottom of it.”
The gunman’s finances
Officials are also investigating the gunman’s finances. According to NBC News, IRS records show that Paddock earned at least $5 million in 2015. Officials said most of that money was from gambling.
