Explosive device discovered in mailbox of George Soros’ home; bomb squad detonates, FBI investigates

A police bomb squad detonated an explosive device that was discovered in the mailbox of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, 88, on Monday.

What are the details of the incident?

According to a New York Times report, staff discovered the device inside the mailbox at Soros' Bedford, New York, home.

The report noted that authorities confirmed that the bomb squad had "proactively detonated" the explosive device before it could go off on its own and cause mayhem.

A Soros staffer had reportedly opened the package that contained the device before realizing what it was. The staffer reportedly placed the device in the woods and immediately phoned authorities.

In a statement, police said, “An employee of the residence opened the package, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device. The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford police.”

Soros was not home at the time, the paper added.

NPR reported that a joint investigation commenced after the staffer contacted law enforcement, including the Westchester County Police Department, the Bedford Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as the FBI.

CNN reported that the Bedford Police Department referred the incident to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Joint Terrorism Task Force for further investigation.

Soros, a hedge fund manager and liberal philanthropist, is reportedly worth more than $8 billion and has been a long-time — and major — donor to Democratic causes.

The FBI's New York bureau shared a tweet about the incident on Twitter late Monday night.

"We are conducting an investigation at and around a residence in Bedford, NY. There is no threat to public safety, and we have no further comment at this time," the tweet read.

Anything else?

In June, the Washington Post reported that Soros, a Holocaust survivor, has been accused of being “an all-powerful puppet master, a Nazi sympathizer, and the person controlling the Democratic Party.”

Soros' Open Society Foundations spends approximately $940 million a year in nearly 100 countries. In just the U.S., Soros' Open Society spends $150 million on liberal groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood.
