BREAKING: Train carrying GOP members of Congress involved in accident

Conservative Review

An Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress to the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia for a policy retreat has suffered an accident. Reports indicate the train collided with a dump truck, throwing lawmakers from their seats and leaving at least one person dead.

According to a statement from Amtrak, the train "came into contact with a vehicle that was on the tracks at 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, Va. There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members. Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage."

Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told Fox News that there was at least one fatality involving those that were in the dump truck that was struck. Most passengers on the train are reportedly OK, but there have been some injuries. At least one individual is in critical condition, according to local news reports.

The White House has been briefed on the accident.

Some members of Congress who are on the train are tweeting about the accident.

Senators Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, helped tend to the injured.

Calling in to Fox News, Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said there were several helicopters on the scene and "lots of armed security" investigating the accident to ensure "there was no nefarious behavior."

“We don't think that's the case,” he said.

Walker said the Republicans are unsure how the accident will affect their plans for the policy retreat. “Don't even know if the train is operable at this point,” he added.

Lawmakers say the train is at least partially derailed, but that at least one operable engine can put the train back on the track.

According to Fox News, the lawmakers will be brought back to Charlottesville, Va., and will board a bus that will transport them to West Virginia.
