From D-Day to government sex studies: You had a good run, America

The achievements of the United States of America are toweringly great.

1) In 1752, Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous experiment that led to the discovery of electricity. Many have tried to estimate just how difficult life would be without it.

2) In September 1787, the United States peacefully drafted and ratified their own Constitution, after declaring independence from Great Britain, a feat that had never before been accomplished.

3) In 1873, Americans Christopher L. Sholes, Frank Haven Hall, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel W. Soule, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, created the first typewriter.

4) In 1967, the United States was the first country to put a man on the moon, shortly after the revolutionary achievement of space travel.

5) On June 6, 1944, 74 years ago today, Allied forces invaded the beaches of Normandy, later called the D-Day invasion, resulting in a decisive Allied victory in World War II. Nearly 5,000 Allied troops gave their lives in that battle.
