Illinois mayor using taxpayer-funded cop car for personal business because reasons
July 17, 2018
An Illinois mayor has reportedly been using a city-owned cop car to go about her personal business, complete with lights, sirens, and a handicap placard that was not issued to her, The Maven reported Sunday. She rolled up the windows when reporters tried to question her.
Alorton Mayor Jo Ann Reed, who reportedly called the use of the taxpayer-funded cop car “a perk of a mayor,” has previously faced felony charges that lead her to resign from the mayoral office and to be fired from the sheriff’s department. Due to an Illinois law for first-time offenders, Reed was able to get her record wiped clean, and she was re-elected in April 2017.
“I think everyone has enough trust in me that I can make the decisions,” Reed told the Belleville News-Democrat at the time.
Reed is currently facing new charges: for buying votes, for electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place, and for demoting a police sergeant who testified against her in the vote-buying investigation.
