New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is pushing legislation that would allow school officials to request a judge to take guns from a student if there is “probable cause” that the student would use a gun to harm others or himself, The Hill reported on Thursday.
Under the bill, school officials could “ask a judge to issue an order that would prohibit a student from buying or possessing a gun” if they believe the student is likely to “engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to himself, herself, or others.”
Cuomo defended the legislation as a protection for teachers.
“A teacher should have recourse. We’re also talking about teachers' safety here,” Cuomo said.
