Report: Potential school shooting stopped by armed resource officer

An armed Illinois school resource officer stopped a potential atrocity Wednesday morning when he shot a 19-year-old who brought a gun to the school.

The former student came to Dixon High School Wednesday and opened fire at the school resource officer, Sauk Valley Media reports. The officer returned fire around 8 a.m., hitting the suspect, City Administrator Danny Langloss said. The young man was put in custody and received medical treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. No one else was injured. Dixon Public Schools were put on lockdown. Police believe the suspect acted alone.

The shooting happened in the school gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice. The school resource officer was identified by Langloss as Mark Dallas.

"We're lucky the officer was there. His brave actions saved a lot of lives," Langloss said. His daughter was among the seniors in the gym.

It seems clear is that a lot of people could have been hurt were it not for this heroic armed school resource officer.
