Vote Alert: Increase Spending by $81 Billion

Vote Alert: Increase Spending by $81 Billion

Congress just had a major vote. How did your elected official vote?

This vote was to approve an additional $81 billion in "emergency" spending as a response to damage caused by hurricanes and other natural disasters in California, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Texas. Despite the fact that Congress had already passed a $36.5 billion spending bill for emergency aid in October 2017, the House of Representatives has approved this new spending increase without offsetting spending cuts.

By the numbers, the bill is fiscally irresponsible, containing no reductions to spending elsewhere in the federal budget. With over $20 trillion in debt, Congress can ill afford to greenlight additional spending without spending cuts or a plan to address future natural disasters that don't require breaking the federal budget. The House voted on and passed this bill on December 21, 2017, in a roll call vote of 251-169.
