Things I won't miss about D.C.

Things I won't miss about D.C.

Let me preface this post by noting that there are some good things about D.C. -- I highly recommend people come visit D.C. for a week, even two if you have the chance.  For any good patriotic American tourist, this city has so much to offer.  For a resident, not so much.

When I first arrived in Washington, D.C. nine years ago, I was brimming with excitement about living in our nation's capital -- America's historic seat of democracy and the host of political showdowns you can't find anywhere else. I was excited to live in the center of it all and it didn't matter to me then that D.C. was the "most liberal" city in the country. I was just thrilled to be here, a part of it all.

That was then. This is now.

I'm ready to move. As a native of Michigan, I long to get back to my rural roots in the Midwest -- where people are self-sufficient yet look after one another as neighbors; where they know how to work a snow plow; where they prefer common sense over political correctness. I'm plotting my escape from D.C. and I thought I'd use the opportunity to share a bit of the progressive politics that drive this city and all the things I won't miss about living here.

It seems fitting to kick off this series with a story "ripped from the headlines" today: "hate chicken."

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray says he won’t support an expanded presence for Chick-fil-A in the district because the president of the fast-food chain is opposed to gay marriage.

Gray, a Democrat, referred to the company’s product as “hate chicken” in a tweet on Friday. His statement referenced his “long-standing strong support for LGBT rights and marriage equality” and followed similar statements by mayors in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco that the company was not welcome.

Thing I won't miss about D.C.: "Tolerant" liberals who won't tolerate anyone who disagrees with them.
