Former President George W. Bush Becomes a Grandfather: 'Our Family Is Elated'

Former first couple George W. and Laura Bush have become grandparents to a "beautiful" baby girl.

The former president's daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, gave birth to her first child on Saturday night in New York City.  The baby's name is Margaret Laura "Mila" Hager, after her grandmothers.

The former president announced the birth in a statement Sunday, after meeting the newborn.

"Laura and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our grandchild, Margaret Laura 'Mila' Hager.  Mila, daughter of Jenna and Henry Hager, is named for her grandmothers," the statement begins.

After giving the date and time of the birth, it continues: "We met our beautiful granddaughter today. Jenna and Mila are healthy. And our family is elated."

Jenna Bush Hager is a contributing correspondent for the "Today" show.  She announced her pregnancy in December -- marking the first grandchild for the former president -- saying she was "nervous and so excited" about the news.

"I'm a first-time mom, but it's something I've always wanted. I'm a teacher and I love kids," she remarked.  Former President George W. Bush jokingly added: "I'll be the guy in the Ford 250 driving around the ranch with the grandchild."

This is a big month for the family.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center will be dedicated on April 25 on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
