Associated Press' Twitter Feed Hacked: Reported Obama Injured in White House 'Explosions

Fake tweet briefly sinks markets.

The Associated Press' twitter account on Tuesday was compromised by hackers who sent out the following "breaking news" alert:

“Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured," the false "report" reads.

Thankfully, this isn’t true. There were no explosions at the White House and the president is doing just fine:

The AP moved quickly to suspend its account and soon sent out the following messages to calm an understandable shocked nation:

Now aside from being a terrible "joke," the false tweet revealed something remarkable:

In the time it took for the AP to lock down its account, U.S. markets took a hard, hard, hard downward turn. The implication is terrifying: Twitter apparently has the power to sink the markets. This could get real interesting, real fast.
