Elderly Buddhist Monk Savagely Beaten and Left for Dead in Oklahoma

"Black eyes, all his teeth knocked out, beaten badly."

A Buddhist monk was savagely attacked and left for dead at his home in Spencer, Okla., on Friday. Two assailants reportedly robbed the elderly man, subsequently beating him with a pipe and fleeing the scene.

For nearly 24 hours, Tony, a man known to his neighbors as a peaceful individual who takes care of rescue animals, was left unconscious on his outside porch.

On Saturday, he awoke, dragged himself inside his home and called the police, KFOR-TV reports.

Neighbors expressed surprise in the wake of the assault, particularly because Tony is not known as a man of means and had little for thieves to steal. Furthermore, those who know him said that he would have willingly offered up anything that was requested of him.

Joel Ortiz, who told the outlet that he is good friends with the Buddhist monk, described his condition following the beating.

"I did peek in the ambulance as they were fixing to leave. I didn't know it was even going on until I saw the ambulance and stuff here," he said. "Black eyes, all his teeth knocked out, beaten badly."

Tony reportedly makes only $350 per month, making it difficult to survive, let alone pay for medical bills resulting from the incident.
