It’s an unfortunate soul whose birthday falls on such a notorious day. Somehow, though, Syrian President Bashar Assad marking his 48th birthday on September 11 seems at minimum ironic.
Israel’s Arutz 7 called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer of a deal to avert an American military strike on Syria a birthday “gift” for the Syrian president.
One Twitter user posing as Assad wrote, "F*** Osama Bin Laden for ruining my birthday! All everyone is talking about is 9/11!!"
Already, the quips are coming in, including these:
Today (Syria's time) is Assad's birthday. How many candles does the cake have? His age or the number of ppl he slaughtered? #Syria— Maher Arar (@Maher Arar) 1378855471.0
Any gift ideas? RT @iyad_elbaghdadi: Today's Bashar al Assad's birthday btw. #Syria— Andrew Stroehlein (@Andrew Stroehlein) 1378882297.0
Happy Birthday to you. You belong in a zoo, You destroyed your country, and we're coming for you. #AssadBirthday #Assad— نور (@نور) 1347378005.0
And from the Assad imposter:
For the record, as of Wednesday afternoon Syria time, Assad had not posted any celebratory birthday photos on his Instagram account.
