Released Guantanamo Bay Detainee Died Fighting Assad Regime, YouTube Video Reportedly Confirms

"We finally have evidence with this video"

A former Guantanamo Bay detainee has died fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, according to a new YouTube video posted by an Islamic opposition group.

The video, uploaded on Monday, purports to show the body of Sheik Abu Ahmad al Muhajir being eulogized as a veteran of the jihad in Afghanistan “who went through hardship for the sake of God in the prison of the Americans in Guantánamo for five years," according to The Miami Herald.

Muhajir was reportedly released from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp during the Bush administration.

An expert told The Miami Herald the posting of the video confirmed reports of the death of a former Guantanamo Bay detainee.

"We finally have evidence with this video from a credible media outlet within the jihadi media sphere," Aaron Zelin, editor of the jihadology blog from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said.

"Obviously there've been cases of people [Guantánamo detainees] who've gone back to continue the fight," he continued.

"It's not surprising. But it is interesting," he added.
