The Inspiring Way Some Detroit Residents Are Trying to Keep Their City Together
September 23, 2013
"I guess someone's as crazy as I am."
We all know Detroit’s in a bad situation. That’s no secret.
Indeed, between filing for bankruptcy, reductions in public services, and everything else that comes with financial ruin, things have been rough for the city’s residents.
But some longtime Detroiters aren’t ready to give up on their city. Some have decided to take matters into their own hands.
A new four-part series from Reason TV, titled “#Anarchy in Detroit,” examines how some Motor City dwellers are banding together to fight off ruin and disrepair.
Part one of the series follows resident Tom Nardone and his gang of fellow lawnmower riders as they roam from playground to playground, chopping out the underbrush to make it playable for the city’s children.
"I was surprised when the first person showed up. I was like, 'All right. I guess someone's as crazy as I am,'" says Nardone.
And that’s when the Mower Gang was born. And it’s exactly what it sounds like. This is what it looks like when people are left to take care of themselves and their communities.
