Boehner: The U.S. May Default On Its Debt If Obama Continues His Refusal To Negotiate

"That's the path we are on."

If President Barack Obama continues to refuse to negotiate with House Republicans, the country may default on its debt, House Speaker John Boehner said on Sunday.

During an appearance on ABC's Sunday program "This Week," Boehner was asked what will happen if Obama maintains his position not to negotiate over raising the debt limit.

"If he [Obama] continues to refuse to negotiate, the country is going to default?" a stunned George Stephanopoulos asked Boehner.

"That's the path we are on," he replied.

"I'm willing to sit down with the president, but his refusal to negotiate is putting our country at risk," he added, reiterating it multiple times throughout the interview.

The president has said he is willing to negotiate changes to his landmark healthcare law and ways to reduce spending, but only after Congress raises the debt ceiling and passes a continuing resolution funding the federal government.

"There may be a back room somewhere," Boehner commented, "But there is nobody in it."
