Chris Christie Reportedly Declined to Stump for Defeated Ken Cuccinelli

"We had our own race to run."

Gov. Chris Christie, who coasted to re-election in New Jersey Tuesday night, reportedly passed on campaigning for fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli, who lost his bid in Virginia.

NBC News' Chuck Todd said on the air Tuesday that "some senior conservative Republicans" had asked Christie to stump for Cuccinelli, but Christie declined.

Cuccinelli lost to Democrat Terry McAuliffe, though by a smaller margin than many had predicted. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and retired Texas Congressman Ron Paul were among the Republicans who joined Cuccinelli on the trail in the campaign's final days.

Christie strategist Mike DuHaime on Wednesday dismissed the decision not to stump for Cuccinelli, saying they had their own campaign to focus on and that in a state that President Barack Obama won handily in 2012, they were taking "nothing for granted."

"We didn't go out of state really ... we had our own race to run," DuHaime told Todd on MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown."
