Your State's Name Comes From...

Texas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio – have you ever wondered where the names of U.S. states actually came from?

If so, we may have just the thing for you: A map that breaks down the known etymologies of the states that make up the republic.

Florida, for example, is Spanish. It comes from “Pascua Florida,” which means “Flowering Easter” (after Spain’s Easter celebrations).

“Indiana” comes from the Latin for “Land of the Indians” and “Ohio” comes from the Iroquois word for “good river.” “New York” is, of course, English (the state is named for the English Duke of York and Albany).

Unsurprisingly, “Hawaii” is Hawaiian.
