Restaurant Posts 'Shockingly Racist' Sign Before Redskins Game

"...send 2 reservation."

A Sonic drive-in restaurant in Belton, Mo., posted a sign this weekend poking fun at the NFL’s Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs -- and some say the sign went too far.

The sign, which was taken down hours after being put up by an employee, read: “`KC Chiefs’ will scalp the Redskins feed them whiskey send – 2 – reservation.”

Unsurprisingly, the sign was met with some pretty severe backlash on social media.

At "first blush (the sign) is just shockingly racist" and "hateful," Audra Simpson, assistant professor of anthropology at Columbia University in New York City, told NBC News.

Patrick Lenow, Sonic's vice president of public relations, told NBC the employee behind the message is “known for creative use of his signs,” but called the NFL-themed board “in poor taste.”

"The remarks posted on this message board were wrong, offensive and unacceptable," Lenow said in a statement. "In a misguided effort to support his football team an independent franchise owner allowed passion to override good judgment. The owner has reinforced with his employees the boundaries of what is acceptable and unacceptable. On behalf of the franchise owner and our entire brand we apologize for the offensive remarks."

He said the employee was very apologetic.

The Chiefs destroyed the Redskins 45-10.
