Woman So Distracted by Facebook She Actually Walked Off a Pier

SYDNEY (TheBlaze/AP) — A tourist walking on a pier in Australia while looking at her phone took one step too far and fell a few dozen feet into the water.

Victoria state police said the woman was walking along the St. Kilda pier in Melbourne on Monday when she became distracted by Facebook and plummeted off the pier into the chilly water.

"She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized ... she said 'I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I've fallen in,'" police said, according to the BBC.

A witness called for help and police rushed to the woman's aid. They found her flailing around in the water, about 65 feet from the pier. She told police she couldn't swim.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the woman is a foreigner but have given no details.

"There will be no need for a lost property report as the woman kept hold of her mobile phone throughout the entire ordeal," police said in a somewhat snarky statement.

This is by no means the first time social media has distracted walkers. A Pennsylvania woman walked into a mall fountain while texting and a Michigan mom doing the same fell into a lake.
