Why Was This Makeshift 'Cemetery' Erected -- Complete With 430 Wooden Crosses?

Pro-lifers are hoping that hundreds of wooden crosses strategically placed in a field near a busy commercial area in Sherwood, Ore., will send a clear message about abortion.

Erected by a Knights of Columbus committee associated with St. Francis Catholic Church, a local congregation, the 430 white crosses placed in the ground on private land are accompanied by a banner that delivers a pointed message: "54 million people were not given the opportunity to choose their own path."

This text refers to the estimated number of unborn babies that have been aborted since Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973.

The display is intended to mark the 41st anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, reported The Christian Post.

Each of the 430 crosses represents 106,000 abortions.

While the council has been active locally in speaking out against abortion, the crosses signify its biggest effort yet.

"We have not done anything like this before," Steve Holthouse, a member of the Knights of Columbus council, told The Oregonian. "It's a new undertaking from us."

In an interview with KATU-TV he added, "You feel like you're walking through a cemetery because, in a way, that's what this is. This is out of respect for the millions of lives that are represented by all of these crosses."

The display is expected to stay up through January.
