Seahawks' Super Bowl Victory Costs Houston Businessman $7 Million

A Houston businessman is out $7 million thanks to the Seattle Seahawks’ victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday night.

In the days leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, Houston’s Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale made a simple promise: Anyone who purchased more than $6,000 worth of furniture during the store’s “Pigskin Promotion” would receive a full refund if the Seahawks won.

The Seahawks trounced the Broncos 43-8.

Unfortunately for McIngvale, his promotion was huge. In fact, it was so big that the Broncos’ loss means he is obligated to refund roughly $7 million to approximately 1,000 very lucky Texans, the businessman announced on his store’s Facebook page.

But the longtime Texas businessman is taking it all in stride.

“We’re trying to create customers for life and make the store relevant and fun, and it was a great promotion for everybody and the customers won and that’s what it’s all about,” he told KRIV-TV.

This isn’t even the first time that McIngvale has lost cash to his customers. In fact, according to KHOU-TV, he once lost more than $600,000 in a similar promotion.

But compared to the amount he’ll have to dish out now that the Seahawks are this year's Super Bowl champions, that earlier payout probably looks like chump change.
