The Gruesome Leg Injury From Baseball's Opening Day That Happened in the Least Expected Way
April 01, 2014
Painful to watch.
The game between the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners hadn't even officially begun before a major injury befell someone on the diamond.
It all began with the ceremonial pitch.
Vladimir Guerrero, who signed a one-day contract with the Angels and retired Monday, threw the pitch to hitting coach Don Baylor who was poised on one knee to catch the ball.
While it might initially look like an innocuous moment, Baylor twisted his leg and immediately went down on his elbows. When he tried to get up by himself, he collapsed, his ankle still awkwardly angled underneath him.
Guerrero jogged to the plate to see what was wrong.
The real cringe-worthy moment comes when Baylor tried to put weight on his leg after he was helped to his feet.
As it turns out, Baylor fractured his right femur bone and requires surgery.
