Blind Gunslinger': A Fascinating Look at the First Totally Blind Person in the U.S. to Obtain a Concealed-Carry Permit

"I always keep one gun for home defense and I always have one gun for concealed-carry."

Carey McWilliams found himself in the national spotlight when he became the first totally blind person in the U.S. to obtain a concealed-carry permit in 2001. Since then, he has battled critics who argue he should’ve lost his Second Amendment rights along with his sight.

In a fascinating profile piece, VICE traveled to North Dakota to meet the “blind gunslinger” and his wife in person.

McWilliams, 27, has plenty of weapons training and was able to pass all of the required proficiency tests, including the National Rifle Association’s, in order to get his concealed weapons permit. He’s an avid hunter and proudly carries a loaded pistol when he goes to the grocery store.

“I always keep one gun for home defense and I always have one gun for concealed-carry,” he said, adding that his concealed handgun is a 9mm. “I do carry every day.”

He’s even more aware of his personal safety after he says a recent violent dog attack left him suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
