Glenn Beck Recalls the Incredible Transformation That Occurred on This Day 13 Years Ago

"We can't let it beat us down."

Glenn Beck has a deep connection to the anniversary of September 12, 2001, the day after the terrorist attacks that forever changed the United States.

"This is the day that we model the 9/12 Project after," Beck explained on his radio program Friday. "Yesterday, we spent the whole day talking about the things that we learned, the things that were taken away from us, the things that we feel we have lost. Today is the day that we now would like to look at the things that we have gained. What happened on 9/11 and, in particular for me, 9/12, that made us better people?"

Beck said that even the worst experiences in his life, like his mom's suicide, shaped him into the man he is today.

"So I could wallow in it, or I could say, 'Wow, look at what came out of that. Life happens. Life sucks a lot. But we can't let it beat us down,'" he said. "We changed overnight on 9/12. Overnight. That fast."

Beck said Americans demonstrated incredible strength the day after 9/11, breaking down all of the barriers that usually divide us.

"All of the sudden, all of those barriers were gone," he said. "We went right back to who we were -- real human beings that loved each other. Real human beings that knew the only thing that mattered was our friendship, was our decency, was our humanity, our freedoms."

"We don't need a tragedy to change us. But when a tragedy happens, we can choose to wallow in it," Beck said. "We can choose to say, 'Look at all that we've lost.' Or we can, today on 9/12 say, 'What have I gained. Who am I?'"

"Who was I 13 years ago?" Beck concluded. "I was a nobody 13 years ago. My job has changed -- a great deal. More importantly, I've changed. I've become a much more deeply spiritual person. I've learned so much about American history. I've learned so much. Look at what you've done in the last 13 years. Just do this again in the next 13 years and watch us shine."
