What Do the 9/11 Flag, JFK's Brain and James Bond's Aston Martin Have in Common? Brad Meltzer Says They're All Missing

"History disappears on us every day."

Thriller author Brad Meltzer has become known for uncovering lost pieces of history, and he now has a show on H2 called "Lost History" in which he'll uncover more than ever.

"The show works like this," Meltzer said on Glenn Beck's radio program Friday. "The famous flag that the firefighters raised on 9/11 -- that flag, Glenn, is now missing. The Wright Brothers' patent for the original airplane is gone. Even James Bond's famous Aston Martin from 'Goldfinger' is stolen."

Not only that, Meltzer said President John F. Kennedy's brain was saved after he died, and it has gone missing as well.

"History disappears on us every day," Meltzer said, explaining that his show tracks down the most fascinating missing items, then tells viewers the story behind the items and who is suspected of having them. Or — if an item was recovered — who really had it.

"The most important part of the show is when I say in the end, 'America, we need your help,'" Meltzer continued. "You go to history.com. You file a tip. If your tip leads to [the recovery of the item], we'll give you a $10,000 reward."

Meltzer said "lost" historical items -- items that were not stolen, simply misplaced -- often turn up in the attics of relatives who passed away.

"The flag famously gets risen by three firefighters," Meltzer said of the 9/11 flag's disappearance. "It becomes famous. It inspires a nation. And city hall gets so inspired they say, 'Give us the flag, we want to use it at Yankee stadium.' Rudy Giuliani signs it. Governor Pataki signs it. They raise it at the stadium. And the Navy says, 'We want it for our troops to salute it going to Afghanistan.' So all these troops salute it. Then this Greek couple comes forward and says, 'That's our flag.'"

The couple said the flag was on the back of their yacht near Ground Zero and somehow ended up in the hands of the firefighters. Meltzer said the firefighters agreed that was likely what happened.

"The Greek couple doesn't want it for themselves," Meltzer added. "They said, 'We want to put it in a museum.' So they bring them back the flag to identify it. They unfurl it at a charity event. And the Greek couple's mouths drop open and they say, 'Our flag was a three by five. ... This flag that was signed by Giuliani, this flag is not our flag.' And then the firefighters come forward and they say, 'This isn't the flag we raised. We raised the three by five flag.' This is a massive flag."

"You know what that means?" Meltzer continued. "It means the original flag that went up in Afghanistan, that flag that went up at Yankee stadium, is the wrong flag."

Meltzer said there is a debate about what happened to the original flag.

"Some say that someone kept it for themselves," he remarked. "Others say that it could have been put on the body of someone who died at Ground Zero, that it may be sitting in a morgue and no one even realizes. And in fact, I was in the green room [with] Rudy Giuliani ... and I asked him about it. He said, 'You got the story right. That's the story. No one knows.'"

"Lost History" premieres Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET on H2.
